Prepress Workflow for Harlequin RIPs
Automated workflow for PC and Mac
Graphics of the Americas 2004, Miami Beach, FL – January 23, 2004 -- Xitron, the industry’s leading independent developer and integrator of Raster Image Processors, announced it has begun shipping the XiFlow Prepress Workflow System, which controls and automates output to Xitron Navigator and other Harlequin-based RIPs. Xitron designed and developed XiFlow in-house as a means to add value and functionality to any prepress environment using Harlequin RIP technology.
As a part of Xitron’s Navigator Solutions, XiFlow runs on a server and controls the flow of jobs directed towards up to three RIPs simultaneously. Using an integrated graphical Workflow Editor, operators define workflows based on input queues. “XiFlow offers a flexible, automated workflow solution for our Navigator customers while presenting the additional benefit of working with other Harlequin RIPs. XiFlow was designed with growth in mind,” explains R. Patrick French, Xitron Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “Prior to XiFlow the solution for Harlequin customers who wanted a prepress workflow was to replace their entire system. Now we can offer them a better alternative through XiFlow.”
XiFlow communicates with the RIPs it controls and displays all RIP configurations (known as Page Setups). Users can select the Page Setups in the XiFlow workflow. Workflow steps may be “chained” together to form a complete job workflow including input of job data, softproofing, inkjet proofing and final output. The XiFlow Client application is an intuitive graphical user interface listing all jobs currently in process along with their status and destination. Using the Client on any workstation, users can preview RIPped files with the FirstProof viewer, an integrated ROAM softproofing application.
XiFlow keeps the original PostScript or PDF job file so it can be output first to a proofer and later to a final output device, or resubmitted if the output parameters change. Jobs may be “held” at various stages for approvals and then released to the next step in the workflow.
“In order to stay competitive in the printing industry, companies continually invest in technologies that make them more productive. On an ever-expanding basis, workflow options are at the top of their wish lists,” says Kevin O’Connor, industry workflow and color management consultant. “Automation in workflow becomes progressively more important for eliminating or reducing errors, but is also essential for competitive increases in productivity.”
XiFlow shipments began in January 2004 with suggested retail price starting at $2,995 depending on configuration. The standard configuration includes support for one RIP and two clients. Additional configurations provide support for up to three RIPs and ten clients (any combination of PC or Mac.) Upgrades are available to allow users to move from one configuration to another.
